Augmented Reality

WHAT IS IT?
Augmented Reality is superimposing digital content on top of physical objects like post cards, brochures, textbook pages, posters, maps, walls, etc. The application we use to create augmented reality objects is called Layar. (The "ar" stands for augmented reality.) Layar allows you to aim your smartphone or tablet at a common physical object, tap the screen and interact with the additional web-based content that will appear on top of the object.

HOW CAN IT BE USED?
Layar can transform everyday objects into a: 1) mediaplayer by bringing print to life with rich media, including video messages, photo slideshows and music clips, 2) social media hub by encouraging interaction with links to share, follow and like your content on various social media networks, 3) conversation by finding new ways to connect vwith your audience via email or phone and with instant interactive polls and surveys.

EXAMPLES

Here is a video on how the Layar app works:

Layar has been used at Cleveland State to create two different poster tours. One is a tour of the Michael Schwartz Library. The other, a campus scavenger hunt. On both tours, students locate posters, aim their smart devices at them and out pops informative digital content such as videos, slide shows, web pages and departmental contact information.
